U14 Boys - Collingwood Invitational Champions

U14 Boys Team 2 - Collingwood Invitational Champions

Not 1, not 2, but 3 shoot outs in a row leading to the championship for the U14 Boys T2 in the Collingwood United Invitational!!!  Lead by wonderful coaches Peter Bulfon and Umit Akin, and coming off their great showing in the Frank Sobil Classic in Oshawa, the boys arrived in Collingwood determined to prove that they could compete against some of the best teams in Ontario.  The first game on Saturday started with a 4-1 loss against a very strong Oakville squad.  Aurora was strong, but it only took a few gaps in the play to allow Oakville to score and win the game.  There was determination and focus going into the next game with Paris FC, resulting in a 1-1 tie.  This set the stage for a quarter-Final against a strong Woolwich squad from the next division.  The skies threatened, but the thunderstorms held off.  The game was hard fought, with emotions running high.  With the game nearing the final 10 minutes, and Paris up 1-0, the ref called a 2nd yellow card against a key Aurora player......we were down to 10.  Then, the unexpected happened!  Aurora picked up the pace, and 10 boys started looking like 11, or 12 or more......Aurora was all over Woolwich.  Only a few minutes to go, when the equalizer went sailing in from a header off a beautiful corner kick.  Woolwich was dazed, and was almost down for the count, and only saved by the final whistle......it would go down to penalties.  The first five shooters were lined up for each team.   As they had been trained all spring, the boys sent their shots to their intended targets, one after the other.  Joey, the amazing Aurora keeper came close once, but then snagged the next one.  The shooters came through.  5-4 Aurora.  They would be in the semi's on Sunday.

The skies were bright and clear for Sunday morning's semi-final, and the heat was building.  Aurora would face a very strong Leaside squad.  They fought and challenged and ground their way to a 0-0 tie, much to the disbelief of the Leaside coaches.  Penalties again!!  Leaside first, Aurora last, with a different mix of shooters from the day before.  Shot....easily saved by Joey, then a goal by Aurora, immediately putting Leaside behind the eight ball.  0-1.  1-2.  2-2.   3-4.   Leaside needed to score.....shot....save by Joey....Aurora was in the finals!!

The finals were against Oakville, the team which we had lost against in our first game, and by 3 goals.  It was noon, the heat and humidity were high, and the boys, parents and coaches were tired.  Still, we were determined to try and give it our best, and hold our heads high.  60 minutes of hard playing, digging and shooting.  Plenty of opportunities on both sides, with Aurora startling and challenging Oakville with plenty of great opportunities to end up again in a 0-0 tie.  A shootout again.  Could we do it 3 in a row?  Yet another mix of shooters for Aurora.  Aurora shooting first   1-1.   2-2.   3-3.   4-4.  5.......4!  Joey makes a fantastic save to end the day with the trophy for Aurora.  A fantastic finish!!

Oh a fringe benefit of winning was meeting Coach Umit's challenge that he would shave his head if we won.

U11 Girls Team 1 - Win Ancaster Heritage Days Tournament

This past weekend the U11 Aurora Stingers Team 1 battled the elements of rain and 30 degree weather to crown themselves Champions in the Ancaster Heritage Days tournament.  Competing in the Top Flight with 12 other teams, the girls went undefeated and conceded only 1 goal all weekend.  This was their first attempt at 11 a side soccer, playing 9v9 in our YRSL league, but after a few shifts the team looked as comfortable as if they had played this all year.  Congratulations on all your hard work, the coaching staff is exceptionally proud of you all!

U10 Girls All Star Team - 2011 Summary

U10 Girls AllStar Team -2011 Summary

The 2011 U10 Girls All Star team had an incredible soccer season closing out the year as the "John Traganitis" Tournament Champions going undefeated in all matches and did not allow one goal in our net resulting in a tournament shout-out!

The girls played their first game against Dixie Mississauga and while the girls had a difficult time finding the back of the net they dominated with many scoring opportunities and eventually winning their first match 2-0. In their second game, the girls faced a strong team from King City and once again kept the majority of play in King City's end of the field winning the game 1-0. In the last game of the round robin, the girls faced their strongest opponent of the day against Stouffville. Our defence played incredible all day and showed the same composure denying all attempts toward our goal resulting in a 0-0 draw.

The undefeated record throughout round robin play resulted in the girls advancing to the semi-final game. The team faced a very tall and strong team from Ajax. As expected, our girls did not back down from the challenge and quickly took control of the game with most of the play in the Ajax end of the field. After a very exciting start striking a post and almost scoring off a corner kick the girls finally found the back of the net at the 15 minute mark going ahead 1-0. In the second half, the offence continued to attack and created many scoring opportunities while our defence shut the Ajax offence down. The game ended 1-0 and the team advanced to the finals. In the final game, the girls faced a very tough team from East Gwillimbury which we have played several times throughout the year. Although, undefeated all season, our matches against them have been very close and required the girls to play their best - this game was no different. From the initial kick off, it was a fierce battle with both teams competing very hard and determined to win. After several attempts including a hitting a goal post and a cross bar, the Aurora team finally struck scoring at the 12 minute mark. From that point on, it was the defensive play which has been the backbone of the team all season that completely shout down the offensive attack. The girls ended up winning the game 1-0 and concluded their tournament undefeated and as tournament Champions!

The tournament was a fantastic way to end our season going undefeated in all matches throughout the year with the exception of 1 game that was decided in a controversial penalty shot shootout. As a result, the girls accomplished the following:

  • Undefeated in all pre-season exhibition games
  • 2011 Lake Simcoe tournament champions (undefeated in all games)
  • 2011 Oshawa tournament finalists (undefeated in all games losing final in penalty shot shoot-out)
  • 2011 Aurora "John Traganitis" tournament champions (undefeated in all games)

The entire team made a significant commitment to the program, achieving a near perfect record throughout the entire season and should be recognized and commended for their efforts and accomplishments in a stellar performance.

Thank you to all the players and parents for making this an incredibly fun and very memorable soccer season!
