U10 Girls Team 1 Win Richmond Hill Challenge Cup
The U10 Girls Team 1 closed out the 2011 season the same way it started, with a tournament victory. On Saturday, September 17 the girls made the short drive down Bayview Avenue to Richmond Hill where they would take on the Richmond Hill Raiders and the Mississauga Falcons Blue in a shortened division round robin winning both games 3 – 1 and 1 – 0 respectively. Advancing straight to the Semi – Final, the Stingers, now short a player due to yet another injury, faced the Vaughan Azzuri Chargers in a very tough game that remained tied 0 – 0 through regulation play and went straight to Penalty Kicks. Great kicks and great goaltending lead the way as the Stingers advanced past Vaughan to face the powerful Mississauga Falcons in the Final. The Stingers enter the Final looking to avenge a Penalty Kick loss to Mississauga in the Niagara Falls tournament back in August. Again, this game was a tough battle for both teams and again the score remained tied 0 - 0 after regulation time. On to Penalty Kicks for second time that day and again the Stingers brought their ‘A’ game as they outscored Mississauga with great kicks and awesome saves to win the Richmond Hill Challenge Cup.
This tournament was a great way to wrap up a season that saw this team achieve so much including:
- Frank Sobil Spring Classic Champions (Oshawa) – defeated OSU from Ottawa, 2 – 1 in Final
- A.C. Douglas Finalist (Niagara Falls) – did not give up a single goal in tournament and lost to Mississauga on Penalty Kicks in Final
- Richmond Hill Challenge Cup Champions – allowed 1 goal the entire tournament and defeated Mississauga on Penalty Kicks in Final
- McGarrigle Cup Champions (YRSL League)
- Undefeated in YRSL League play for the 3rd consecutive year 15-0-0, outscored opponents 94 - 4
- Competed in the FC Delco tournament in Pennsylvania against top ranked U.S. teams and only gave up 2 goals in 3 games
The U10 Girls are the benefactors of a great development program provided by both their Coach’s and the AYSC. Most importantly, they are a great group of young athletes who constantly demonstrate positive character traits and a tremendous work ethic in practice and during games.
