2000 Girls Team 2 � Brams United Invitational Tournament 2010 Champions!

The Aurora Stingers 2000 Girls Team 2 is having an incredible summer. They have always been an underdog team � never catching any breaks � not always winning, but definitely competing in every single game. Every girl on the team has such great spirit � winning and losing graciously and playing with heart. So far this season (with only two of twelve games remaining), the girls have won two and tied two�but put them in tournaments and cup-play and they really shine!

Can-Am Tournament

It started with the Can-Am tournament right here in Aurora. They finished first in their pool with 2 wins (1-0 vs Newmarket United Red, 2-1 vs North London Jr. Lasers) and a tie (0-0 vs. Oak Ridges Knights). They faced Oak Ridges again in the semi-finals � every time they play this team it ends in a tie. This game was no exception, ending 3-3 in regulation time. Then in overtime, Selina Issa scored a fantastic goal on a free kick, putting the Stingers in the U10 Girls finals! They played a fantastic final game vs Barrie Spirit, but just couldn't put one in the net, finishing 2nd overall with a 1-0 loss to Barrie.

McGarrigle Cup � heading to the Semi-Finals!

In the first round of the McGarrigle Cup, the 2000 Stinger Girls Team 2 defeated Newmarket United Red with a 2-1 win.

In the quarter-final, they faced the Thornhill Thunder this past Friday and played their best game yet. Two fantastic goals � one from the corner by Michaela Iacono in the first 3 minutes of the game. Another a few minutes later when a free kick by Selina Issa bounced over the goalie's head and Vanessa Carriere was there to finish it off! The Thunder did not even have a shot on goal until the 2nd half and couldn't put anything in our net. A fantastic 2-0 win and they are moving on to the semi-finals against Barrie Spirit this coming Saturday.

Brams United Invitational Tournament � Undefeated Champions!

During a very hot and humid weekend in Brampton, the Stingers 2000 Girls Team 2 won all 3 games on the Saturday to finish in first position for the semi-finals. First was 3-0 vs Brams United Cyclones, then 3-1 vs Thornhill Thunder and 2-1 vs the Brams United Shockers. In the semi-finals, they beat the Cyclones again 7-0 � really outplayed them.

Then they faced Thornhill Thunder again in the finals (3 days in a row they played this team!!). What a nail-biter. Scoreless almost to the end of the first half � some great chances on both sides. Thornhill scored on a penalty shot. Then our Michaela Iacono scored on a penalty shot to tie it up 1-1 at the half. Then Thornhill scored a goal. Only 15 minutes to go and the Stingers are down 2-1. Then a beautiful goal by Florence Awde to tie it up. The Stinger fans are going crazy � if it ends in a tie, it's going to a penalty shoot-out!! Then with a couple of minutes to go, Vanessa Carriere scores an incredible goal!!! Woo hoo!! The Stingers are in the lead!! The parents are out of their seats and screaming!!!!!!! There's maybe 2 minutes left � must hang on to this lead!!! The ball is in the Stinger's end, it's pinging back and forth and a hard shot is going to the far corner.......keeper Charlotte Bulmer makes a FLYING DIVE to the other side of the net and takes the ball in the gut and makes a HUGE game winning save!!!! But oh no.....she's not getting up....she's winded. Coach Nick Iacono is there and Charlotte's lying on her back trying to breathe. Coach Nick is bringing her legs up to her chest and back again, helping her to get her breath. He's chanting to her, "Breathe in, breathe out, you just made the save that won us the cup.....breathe in, breathe out, you just made the save that won us the cup......" She gets up, has a sip of water and is on her feet and ready to play!!! There's still 2 minutes left. Fans on both sides are screaming and going crazy......the Stingers can't get the ball out of their end....Charlotte Bulmer saves two more shots on goal.......and FINALLY the ref blows the whistle........THE STINGERS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

So look out McGarrigle Cup semi-finalists � here come the Aurora Stingers 2000 Girls Team 2!

The girls went undefeated during pool play, and lost in the finals, in the last 90 seconds of the game 1-0.

Girls played with heart, and never gave up. Coach and parents all proud of they're Stingers.

U14 Girls: Win the San Marino Cup!

The Aurora Stingers U14 Girls were in Italy this past week and have sent the following email updates:

Days 1-3:

The U14 girls left Toronto on July 2 and flew into Venice, Italy. Day 2 was spent sightseeing the beautiful city of Venice and then we travelled to the Republic of San Marino to compete in the 2010 San Marino Cup. Day 3 started with a team practice and then it was off to the beach in Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

Day 4:

After a couple of days touring in Venice and then Rimini we played our first

game today against Soca Soccer Academy from Virginia, USA. The Aurora

girls played very well and were unlucky to come away with a 0-0 tie.

Fantastic team effort against a very good side.

The opening ceremonies were that evening and the girls proudly represented Aurora and Canada.

Day 5, Part 1:

Another update from the U14 trip to the San Marino Cup.
This morning we played Leppavaaran Pallo from Finland and after a very
dominant game we came away with a 2-0 win.
Last night we attended the opening ceremony where we represented Aurora and Canada.

Day 5, Part 2:

We just played Game 3 against CFF Clujana from Romania.
The Aurora girlswere very strong and tied an excellent team 1-1.

By the end of the day Aurora Stingers were sitting at the top of
the table, unbeaten in three games.

One more game to go tomorrow and then hopefully we are off to the final
round of games on Saturday.

Day 6:

Aurora Stingers sting the Italians from FCF Como 2000!

After a well fought battle in scorching temperatures the Aurora girls scored a brilliant 2 on 1 goal a few minutes from time and they came away with a 1-0 victory. The U14 Girls are assured of a place in the final and they could also win the qualifying group.

The girls made the coaching staff and their parents very proud today!

Day 7:

Stingers had the day off today and so we headed off to the beach.
Games today had the USA winning and so we will meet them in the final.
Aurora Stingers were the only unbeaten team in the qualifying round and we finished in 1st place.

Tonight the coaches play the referees in what should be an exciting game!
The girls get a chance to see how their coaches play.

The final game is on Saturday at 11 am.

Day 7 Update 2:

The U14 Girls Stingers are heading into the finals of the San Marino Cup tomorrow, defending their first-place position against the U.S. team.

Playing in record high temperatures nearing 40C and under sunny Italian skies, the team has a no-loss record after fending off elite-level teams from Virginia (0-0), Romania (1-1), Finland (2-0) and Italy (1-0).
Forty-eight teams from 12 countries are taking part in the international tournament that combines high-calibre competition in soccer and basketball for girls and boys with an opportunity to explore the culture and heritage of this picturesque independent republic in the mountains of central Italy.

Since leaving Aurora July 2, the 17 players, with head coach George Watt, assistant coach Collie Salmon, trainer Dan Rife, manager Colin McCreesh and parents, explored the ancient canal city of Venice before travelling 657 metres above sea level into the mountains of San Marino, marked by its three medieval fortresses atop its peaks, and enjoying the nearby beaches of Rimini on the Adriatic Coast.

After competing in the finals, the team will travel to the Florence area for a training session with a professional Italian coach, a visit to the Italian Soccer Federation Museum and guided tour of Florence.
The trip of an lifetime continues with a stay in Montecatini, the spa and art nouveau city, a visit to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a friendly match with the Real Aglianese, before reaching the final destination of beautiful and historic Rome. The team arrives home July 14.

Day 8:

Stinger Girls win the San Marino Cup.

After a closely fought game in extremely hot weather the Stingers came away with the Cup against Soca Girls from Virginia. The score was 1-1 at full time and the Stingers won 4-3 on penalties!

U14 Girls T2 - Ottawa IceBreaker Champs!

Congratulations to the girls on winning their first tournament of the year,
the 2010 Ottawa Icebreaker.

The girls topped their Division and easily won their initial playoff round game to close out the first day of competition. The Stingers were rewarded with a bountiful team dinner and an impromptu tour of downtown Ottawa (including the Parliament buildings).

In the semi-final the Stingers scored early and ran out comfortable 3-0 victors over Oshawa Turul.

On to the final, and the team culminated the tournament with a thoroughly dominating performance against Ottawa South United. The girls passed the ball at will and attacked mercilessly. Within minutes it was 3-0. Both teams managed one goal each in the second half. The final whistle blew and the Stingers celebrated a well deserved victory. All that remained was the medal ceremony, and a long ride home. It's amazing how a gold medal can make even a 350 km trek bearable.
