Aurora Stingers 1995 Girls Soccer Team
Attending the 2010 Ontario Summer Games in search of the Provincial Championship.
It's not everyone who gets a chance to compete in such a high level athletic event as the Ontario Summer Games.
Well that's exactly what the 1995 Aurora Stingers Girls Soccer are doing this week. (See schedule below)
Having gone unbeaten and qualifying from a previous group stage by eliminating Vaughan, Waterloo, Kitchener and Ottawa this talented team has been preparing to do battle with 7 other teams from across the province hoping to claim the title of Ontario Champions.
The Ontario Summer Games are being held in Sudbury this year from August 10th-13th, and over 3,500 athletes are preparing to participate in 32 different sports at 31 venues. For these girls it's all about soccer!
"It's great the girls have qualified for the games and I am pretty sure they are unaware of the size of this event" says Chris Speller the team Head Coach. "This is a huge event and I'm sure many of the athletes we see over the next week will be representing their country in various sporting events around the world. I'm sure some will be at the Olympics in the future."
He continues "Obviously we are coming to the games to win the Provincial Championship, but there are some very good teams here and the competition will be tough. We know we will have to be at our best...and be up for the challenge. But these games mean more than that, they are creating a lifetime memory for each and every one of the players. They will make new friends even renew old friendships. But the most important part that applies to all these athletes, is they remember why they are here. It's the hours and hours of practice time that has brought them to this level. Putting off other perhaps more exciting options that may have been available to them to keep working at improving their ability."
Many of the athletes participating at the Ontario Summer Games are looking to earn a scholarship in Canada or the USA so they can keep working at their sport while obtaining solid academic credentials.
The 1995 Aurora Stingers played in a Showcase Tournament in May winning their group and more recently attended an ID Camp where 120 girls practiced with various US College coaches. This provided the girls with a perfect opportunity to see what is expected of them at the University level, while also offering a great observation point for the coaches to see the girls and make notes while they were going through various drills and playing in games.
Speller concludes" The object at the local team level, and definitely within the Aurora Youth Soccer Club is to improve each individual player to a standard where they can improve their individual ability and play at a higher level.
Although having a winning team is important it is the individual player skill that is paramount. Players can learn systems at any time of their life, but if they don't get the fundamentals down they will not succeed. Every year I have players coming to me from across York Region and beyond wanting to improve their ball skills, to become better players, and with hard work they can achieve this goal. This team is recognised for its players having good ball skills. This year we hope those skills and some solid team play will help the girls in their pursuit of the Provincial Championships."
