2011 Rep Pep Rally

< Pictures are at the bottom>

2005 was the last time the AYSC Rep program held a pep rally to celebrate the start to its summer season. It was a simple gathering at Cardinal Carter High School. It was nothing crazy by any means but it was something.

For the next 5 years, the club had nothing to give to its players in celebration of their hard work over the winter and in excitement for the upcoming summer season.

In 2011 things changed drastically thanks to the ideas and determination of a technical staff and Board of directors who knew one thing and agreed- the kids come first.

On Victoria Day 2011, the AYSC prepared a day that will not be forgotten. Who could forget the sea of blue marching through Sheppards Bush on a rainy holiday Monday? Who could forget the smiles and excitement on the kid's faces as they marched passed family and friends cheering them on? That's what it's all about; the players.

For those that were unable to attend, here is a glimpse in how the day went. Regardless of the weather our day was full of excitement. A welcome parade began the celebration. Almost every Rep team in the AYSC was in attendance. We heard introductory speeches from Club President Mike Curci, VP Competitive Matteo Rustico and Club Technical Director David Thorburn. Encouraging words from all 3 individuals setting the tone in anticipation of an amazing summer season.

Following the introductions of the rep teams, the kids were given a little surprise. They got to see Canadian Freestyle Champion Jose Avalos perform his incredible tricks live right at Sheppards Bush! What a treat! Even in pouring rain, the young Canadian was still able to "ooh and ahh" the players and parents alike.

All the families in attendance were then given the opportunity to mingle and enjoy a nice BBQ courtesy of M&M Meats. Again even in pouring rain it was amazing to see everyone stick around and enjoy themselves.

It was a wonderful day and in the words of VP Competitive Matteo Rustico, "last year when I took over as VP of Rep, I promised myself that I would bring back a celebration of the commitment and dedication it takes to be a competitive athlete (at the beginning and end of the season). The first goal I hope was met and next year we want it to be even better." We hope so too Matteo!

This great day ended with a great soccer match to boot. David Thorburn and his team of Ex-pros played against our own AYSC Rep Coaches. Highlighting the event were players such as Scottish and Rangers Hall of Famer Bobby Russell, former Mexican national team player Ruben Flores, former TFC Captain Jim Brennan and YRSA Technical Director Bobby Lennox. The match provided great entertainment for the players and families and although our coaches lost the match, it was a great experience for all.

Matteo Rustico's promise of creating a true Pep Rally is only one step in the right direction and perhaps the most important one. Without the help of a supporting cast the day could not have been what it was. With that said we extend special thanks to The AYSC Board of Directors who supported the Pep Rally project right from the beginning:
